Somedays you must feel that you have done a lot of work and finished almost 80% of the tasks. You always feel happy when you do that. But if a person (who is checking your work) not appraise you on the work you have done, suddenly your mood swings and you don’t feel happy. Well, it’s a matter of fact, that you never expected this kind of answer you get from that person.
I believe you must be thinking now that why I choose to write this topic but it’s important though. Everyone thinks only the positive impact they get after finished a particular task. But no one thinks about the other side i.e. the negative impact. Why? I want you to comment below and tell your answer to me.
Let’s take an example here to understand this topic in a better way. Mohit Kaushik is a person who works in a Multi National Company in Gurugram as an Accounts Associate, he believes that we should work as per the office time only and must log off once the office hours completed. But few weeks ago, Mohit got a project from his management and he works dedicatedly to understand the project.
Finally once the project finished after 2 weeks, he looked into his own work for which he gets hired into his organization. But his few task was pending and he started work few minutes/hours more to complete the task for 2-3 weeks. He never thought about his login and log off hours but he did it. Obviously you cannot complete all the task in one day, few must be pending.
So, during Mohit’s monthly review, his manager scolded him and said he didn’t do well this month, few of his task is incomplete. He informed him about the ongoing project and the workload increased which causes little delay in the task. But another week gone and the same scenario in front of Mohit as his manager warn him to complete the task and he wasn’t happy with Mohit performance. Mohit suddenly got sad and was talking himself negatively. Then he started reading a book in which 80-20 principle was followed.

What is 80-20 principle? It is a Pareto Principle that 80% of outcomes results from 20% of all causes for any given event. Means once managers identify factors that are critical to their company’s success, they should give those factors the most focus. Always follow this 80-20 principle in your life as it will give you the confidence to achieve your goals. In this rule, you prioritize the 20% of factors that will produce the best results and not hard and fast rule.
Real World Example of the 80-20 principle.
A Harvard graduate student, Carla, was working on an assignment for her digital communications class. The project was to create a blog and monitor its success during the course of a semester. Carla designed, created, and launched the site. Midway through the term, the professor conducted an evaluation of the blogs. Carla’s blog, though it had achieved some visibility, generated the least amount of traffic compared with her classmates’ blogs.
